Is there anything that screams summer more than baseball? America’s pastime has left an indelible mark on the sporting landscape of Indiana. Our state boasts a rich baseball history; in fact, the first major league game was played here between the Cleveland Forest Cities and the Ft. Wayne Kekiongas in 1871! While we may not have a Major League team anymore, Indiana has had five teams throughout history and currently hosts a number of minor and independent league teams to scratch that ballpark itch. 

 

Minor League Marvels 

You’re not a true resident on Indianapolis unless you’ve been to an Indians game, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Indians have a storied history dating back to 1902 and have provided a platform for many future Major League stars, not to mention Victory Field has been named one of the best ballparks in all of minor league baseball. 

Then there’s the South Bend Cubs, affiliated with the other Cubs from Chicago. This Class A team has captivated fans with their thrilling performances at Four Winds Field, cultivating a strong fan base that’s contributing to the rich baseball culture in northern Indiana. 

 

Independent League Gems

In addition to minor league teams, Indiana has seen the emergence of independent league teams. The Gary SouthShore RailCats for example are a member of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. Their games at U.S. Steel Yard provide an intimate setting for fans to enjoy high-quality baseball outside the confines of affiliated leagues.

 

Negro League Heroes 

Indiana’s baseball legacy extends to the era of the Negro Leagues, where talented African American players showcased their skills despite the racial segregation of the time. The Indianapolis Clowns, a Negro League team founded in the 1930s, gained popularity for their entertaining style of play and comedic routines. They brought joy to fans across Indiana and beyond and left an indelible mark on the history of baseball.

Then there were the Indianapolis ABCs, one of the earliest Negro League teams. Founded in 1915, the ABCs featured exceptional players such as native son Oscar Charleston, otherwise known as the “Black Babe Ruth,” achieving great success in their time. The team’s contributions to the sport paved the way for future generations of African American players and left a lasting legacy in the annals of baseball history. 

 

Preserving Indiana’s Baseball Heritage

While some of the teams from Indiana’s baseball past have faded away, their impact continues to be felt. Efforts are underway to preserve the history and legacy of these teams through exhibits, memorabilia, and commemorative events. The Indiana Historical Society, for example, hosts exhibits and educational programs that highlight the contributions of Indiana’s baseball teams and players.

 

Extra Innings

A full history of baseball in Indiana would require an inordinate number of volumes and is probably too much for any one person to absorb: it’s just that extensive.
